How successful estate regeneration enables people to settle and thrive.
In this chapter we consider the balance between social mobility and social cohesion on housing estates, caricatured in national discourse as people from ‘anywhere’ versus people from ‘somewhere’, and the social effects of different kinds of regeneration in a range of contexts. We discuss ‘lifetime neighbourhoods’ as an approach to creating stable and prosperous communities, and we consider the need for special provision for younger and older people.
